An Investigation into the degradation of cosmetic, orthopaedic, reconstructive and life prolonging implants in a clandestine burial environment
L.J.Miller, J.Cassella, K.Harrison

This ongoing research studies the decomposition of silicone, metal, plastic and human/animal implants when buried with a pig carcass. Tests are to be conducted on the implants themselves, the surrounding decomposing tissue and the putrefaction fluids in the surrounding soil. This hopes to give investigators a ‘time since death’ of the buried individual. Also the physical appearance of the decomposed implants, and to how distorted they might be, so that they are not overlooked as a form of identification.

Classification of Tattoos
L.J.Miller, J.Wright

The diversity (and not such diversity) of tattoos in the modern world makes identification through tattoos ideal. A database of the certain classifications of tattoos, common meanings behind tattoos, certain lifestyles tattoos represent, certain styles of certain tattoo artists etc would aid investigators in this area.

The visibility of covered up tattoos using a common SLR camera and a computer based programme
L.J.Miller, J.T.Miller, J.Wright

This study is aiming to see, whether tattoos that have been covered up by another tattoo, can be uncovered. The project uses a common Nikon camera, and the images are scanned into a computer, then using adobe Photoshop, manipulation of the image in the form of varying the colour levels, light levels and layers etc, can the underlying tattoo be uncovered?

Using modern 3d photography used in crime scenes, a report from a 1940’s supposed suicide case is reconstructed. Indicating that the suicide could have actually been an execution style of killing.

L.J.Miller, J. T. Miller, B. Partridge, A.Oikonomou

These are to be developed to teach forensic science, and it’s associated disciplines to a variety of students. From primary school age, through secondary, university and also specialist training programmes for professionals. These programmes intend to be an aid to physical learning of the subject.
